Student Groups

At the heart of UMSU are the over 110 student groups and services that provide students with cultural, religious, political and recreational programs, which range from dance and photography to environmental and social justice.

With such a diversity of groups, you are bound to find a group that matches your interests.

Looking to apply online as a student group?

Student Group Assistance

There are a number of ways UMSU can assist your student group: it can arrange meeting and storage space, mailboxes, access to ticket selling at Answers, and official UMSU student group status. Recognised student groups may apply for special event funds and office space. Student groups serve a variety of interests and needs including various hobby, sport, religious, political, social, ethnic and cultural activities.

Student Group Recruitment Week

If you want to get more involved within the University, look for Student Group Recruitment Week to be held in September and January in University Centre. Sign up for the group of your choice and enhance your university experience.

UMSU Businesses

The University of Manitoba Students' Union owns and operates six businesses on the Fort Garry Campus. You can find the Digital Copy Centre, G.P.A.'s, IQ's, Degrees, and The Hub in University Centre; and Archives in the UMSU Annex, on the first floor of the Helen Glass Centre for Nursing.

The businesses meet those extra student needs and range from a snack bar, to recreation, lounging, printing, and answering inquiries. Money generated from the businesses supplements funding of UMSU services, student support, and Union initiatives.

UMSU Events

celebration_week_pancakes.jpg In addition to advocacy work, UMSU strives to provide students at the University of Manitoba with outstanding cultural, social, political and academic events throughout the year.

There are activities on both the Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses all year long. When you plan to attend an event, be sure to get your tickets early. Watch for musical acts, speakers, and workshops!

Some of the major events to watch for during the year include:

Orientation Week

(FIRST TWO WEEKS OF FALL CLASSES)

Orientation Week is the first major event of the year on both the Fort Garry and Bannatyne campuses. It is Orientation Week that gives University of Manitoba students a critical first impression for the rest of the year. Orientation is a unique opportunity to meet people and get involved with your Students' Union. The week includes numerous local, national and international entertainers as well as a number of interactive and cultural events both indoors and outdoors around campus. Past headlining acts include the Tragically Hip, Sloan, and SUM 41.

Halloween Social

Malpractice - OCTOBER

Malpractice is UMSU's Annual Halloween Party. This event sells out every year to 1,000 people and is the most anticipated Halloween party in Winnipeg. Huge cash prizes for best costumes, great music and free pizza are all a part of this annual event.

Celebration Week

JANUARY

Introduced over 30 years ago, Celebration Week: A Festival of Life and Learning, is renowned for its dynamic speaker series. Of the many events that take place during this week, the speaker series is by far the most high-profile and anticipated feature. Jean Chrétien, Dr. David Suzuki, Justin Trudeau, Rob Corddry, Jack Hanna and Ice T have all been part of the Celebration Week Speaker Series. Keep an eye out for next years' guest lecturers as they are guaranteed to be relevant and engaging with an important message for students!

Celebration Week is more than just the speakers however! It is also a multi-faceted event focusing on promoting both academic debate and the arts. Performances by the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Music and various cultural groups on campus and the surrounding area help create an event that is truly unique within the city of Winnipeg.

Additional Programming Events

Keep an eye on the UMSU website for additional programming events throughout the academic year.
