Winnipeg, MB – Iconic café-style study space and pool hall at the University of Manitoba, IQ’s Café & Billiards, is celebrating its first extensive upgrade in 15 years with a Grand Re-Opening on Jan. 11, 2018, on the 3rd Floor of UMSU University Centre.

IQ’s, which has remained a favourite student hangout location and provided a welcoming space for the university community for nearly two decades, is owned and operated by the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU). UMSU council approved the spending of just over $1 million to completely renovate IQ’s and its facilities over summer 2017– a much-needed modernization to enhance student and visitor experience.

“With students today quickly adapting and becoming accustomed to ever-advancing technology, the renovations to IQ’s offer updated services and a more modern, comfortable place to study or relax on campus,” says Brandon Whyte, Manager of IQ’s Café & Billiards.

Updated IQ’s amenities include professional-grade Diamond League pool tables, a state-of-the-art audio visual and speaker system, USB plug-ins and power outlets at every table and seating area, free Wi-Fi, and a grab-and-go deli featuring the return of classic Starbucks favourites that IQ’s is well known for serving. Unrecognizable after renovations, the interior of IQ’s has been opened up to create an inviting atmosphere with rows of large windows, sustainable lighting fixtures and pool table lights, brand new seating and tables, and digital menu displays.

“We are happy to provide a revitalized space for students to study, hang out with friends, grab a beverage or snack, and host events,” says UMSU President Tanjit Nagra. “We’re very excited about the renovations to IQ’s – this project began last year with direction from the UMSU Executive Team and Council, and was spearheaded by last year’s Vice President Internal Adam Pawlak. It was carried over with the help of our Business Management Team and this year’s Vice President Finance and Operations, Jehan Moorthy.”
