About UMSU

Who We Are

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) was founded in 1919 as the representative student body of The University of Manitoba. Our mission is to support and represent the student community, focusing on academic advocacy, enhancing student experiences, and fostering a vibrant campus culture.

UMSU Members

UMSU proudly represents over 26,000 undergraduate students at the University of Manitoba. As the sole student government in Canada with its own specific law – the UMSU Act – we are committed to serving our diverse student body.

As an undergraduate student at the University of Manitoba, you automatically become an UMSU Member!  This means you have access to a wide array of services, supports, events and programming that are tailored for you.

UMSU Executive Team

Our five-member UMSU Executive team is voted into office annually. They serve as the faces, stewards, and advocates of the Union, working tirelessly to address student concerns and improve campus life.

Board of Directors

The Board of Directors serves as the highest governing body within UMSU. Comprised of elected faculty representatives, the Board ensures that student voices are heard and decisions are made in the best interest of the entire community.

Our Mission

UMSU will provide the undergraduate student community with advocacy, support, and services to positively impact their academic experience and their lives as part of holistic student development.

Our Vision

UMSU fosters a supportive environment for its diverse membership by establishing a strong foundation rooted in academic excellence, holistic well-being, and vibrant student life. We achieve this through student groups, health awareness initiatives, and encouragement of scholarly growth.

Our Impact

In 1970, UMSU solidified its role as an integral part of the University of Manitoba by partnering with the University administration to build and co-own the UMSU University Centre – a bustling hub of activity on campus. This space has allowed us to expand our on-campus services and businesses, including:

  • UMSU Service Centre: Providing essential resources and support to students.
  • Degrees Diner: A popular dining spot for the university community.
  • GPA’s Campus Convenience: Your go-to for snacks, stationery, and more.
  • IQ’s Café and Billiards: A relaxed space for studying and socializing.
  • VW Social Club: Hosting events and fostering connections.
  • UMCycle: Promoting sustainable transportation through bike rentals and repair services.

Our Commitment

UMSU operates as a strictly not-for-profit organization, funded by mandatory student organization fees. These fees are allocated to our internal operations, service provision, and support for faculty student councils.

We are proud to serve you, the students of the University of Manitoba, and we look forward to continuing our legacy of advocacy, community building, and positive impact.
