Winnipeg, MB â Yesterday, the University of Manitoba Studentsâ Union (UMSU) President, Vice President Finance and Operations, and Vice President Advocacy presented an alternative proposal to the City of Winnipegâs Public Works Committee in opposition to the fee increase of $24.50 per term for the Universal Transit Pass (U-Pass). The UMSU Executives submitted a proposal to extend the Winter Term U-Pass into an 8-month pass instead, allowing the summer months to be included in the pass at a 50% cost increase.
While the City approved the fee increase on the current U-Pass program, they mandated Public Works to study UMSUâs plan and report back in 90 days.
âWeâre pleased the City recognized our plan is worth consideration,â said UMSU President Jakob Sanderson. âWe hope to bring this option back to students to give us a better opportunity to extend the U-Pass, and continue to increase ridership and do our part to reduce emissions.â
A referendum will be necessary for any increase to the U-Pass fee above the rate of inflation.
