Endowment Fund Board of Trustees

The Scholarship & Bursary and Endowment Funds were created to assist students in need, reward excellence and provide services to improve student life.

The Endowment Fund is separately incorporated registered charity and wholly owned by UMSU but is governed by a separate Board of Trustees. The eight-member Board is comprised of students, members of the community at large, and members of the executive (Vice-President Student Services, Vice-President Internal, and President (non-voting). Since inception, awards to students surpass well over 16,000 in number and $9 million in value.

The Scholarship & Bursary Fund has been moved under UMSU in recent years, and all funds that come into the fund are matched by the Province of Manitoba (through the Manitoba Scholarship and Bursary Initiative) and then immediately distributed to students in the form of bursaries (on a needs basis as administered through U of M Financial Aid & Awards) and scholarships (to the top 4% in each faculty). Each year, the combination of student fees and Provincial matching funds from MSBI create annual revenues in the order of $1.2 million. Of those monies, approximately 70% are allocated to bursaries ($750 each) and 30% to scholarships ($750 each). The Endowment Fund is invested based on the decisions of the Board of Trustees. The interest is allocated to student services as approved by the Board. Some of the initiatives funded by the Endowment fund include:

  • Bison Sunday Grocery Run
