The University of Manitoba Students’ Union is pleased with the provincial government’s recent announcement to raise the maximum benefit of Manitoba Student Loans by $60, from $140 to $200 per week. The change will come into effect August 1, 2023.  

This is the first increase to the weekly loan amount since the 2005-06 program and, while UMSU believes that 18 years is too long to have waited for an increase, we welcome the government’s action.  

UMSU believes that there is still more work to do to make post-secondary education affordable and we look forward to working with the provincial government in a spirit of collaboration. UMSU eagerly anticipates identifying how candidates running in the 2023 Provincial Election plan on bolstering post-secondary education in Manitoba.
