The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) is concerned about with the ongoing discussions within the federal government regarding the potential implementation of caps on international student admissions in Canada due to perceived concerns related to the housing crisis. UMSU recognizes that the housing crisis needs to be addressed but believes that the proposed solution is misguided. 

The housing crisis is a complex issue that is caused by numerous factors UMSU, along with other institutions and organizations, acknowledge the importance of ensuring that both domestic and international students have access to affordable and students have access to affordable and adequate housing opportunities. The solution should be comprehensive and multifaceted to address the issue nationwide in a timely manner that does not place the blame on international students. 

International students have long been an integral part of the Canadian academic landscape, bringing diverse perspectives, enriching the overall educational experience, and contributing to the Canadian economy. International students are currently filling critical gaps in Canada’s work force like construction, healthcare and education. UMSU believes that preserving an open and welcoming approach to international student admissions can coexist with efforts to alleviate the housing crisis. Collaborative solutions that involve various stakeholders, including government bodies, educational institutions, students, and housing providers, are key to achieving a balanced outcome. 

UMSU remains committed to advocating for the welfare and interests of the students it represents, including finding solutions to housing challenges students face. UMSU urges the federal government to reconsider its potential implementation of a cap on international students and to invest in proper data on student housing supply to know the extent and root causes of the student housing crisis.
