Community Groups Coordinator

Part Time | 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday

Reporting to the Service Centre Manager the primary responsibilities of the community group’s coordinator is to assist administering the daily operations of the community group centres. The incumbent will also provide direction to community representatives on UMSU administrative policy and procedures in cooperation with the Vice President of Student Life and the Services Coordinator to help meet the needs of students. The incumbent will be expected to become familiar with Student Group policies and procedures relevant to UMSU operations. This position requires a maximum of twenty (20) hours weekly.

  • Open rooms for Community Representatives (8:30am – 4:00pm)
  • CIF and budget funding assistance
  • Resource and support guidance for students visiting the room
  • Recruit volunteers, plan training and scheduling tasks of volunteers
  • Assist in completing projects and planning events
  • Room bookings, equipment rentals, planning and organization, etc.
  • Be responsible to the UMSU Vice President of Student Life and the UMSU Services Coordinator
  • Experience with outreach, community building and organizing volunteers
  • Strong communication skills, as well as excellent interpersonal skills, organizational and time management skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse range of people and accommodate their specific interests and needs
  • Awareness and sensitivity including but not limited to: sexism, ableism, racism, ageism, transphobia and homophobia
  • Preference with knowledge about UMSU and its governing structures
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office programs

Cycling Associate

Casual | 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday

Reporting to the Cycling Sales & Service Coordinator the associate assists with the daily operations of the kiosk, warehouse operations, assisting staff members and customers. In addition, the incumbent will be responsible for keeping the premises safe and clean for workers and customers. Operating hours are Monday - Friday between 8:30am - 4:30pm. As this is a casual position, timeline of the position is based on operational needs.

  • Experience repairing bicycles – installation and repair of all systems of the bike (brakes, drive, steering, wheels, accessories) as well as experience with bicycle fitting;
  • Organize and facilitate bicycle workshops on safety & riding skills, repairs and maintenance
  • Assist customers in choosing the right bikes and accessories by providing expert opinion
  • Create work orders for repair and maintenance offerings
  • Ensure that all service processes are quickly and efficiently carried out
  • Oversee thorough and accurate bike building and accessory installation work
  • Forecast bike and accessories inventory, and communicate low stock inventory to the Coordinator
  • Equivalent combination of experience would be considered.

Cheif Returning Officer

Term | September 2023 - April 2024

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Chief Returning Officer (CRO) is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the UMSU election/referenda process; i.e. on-line/in-person voting, including the promotion and engagement of the electoral process, administration of voting stations, the coordination and accuracy of ballot counting, and ruling on election/referenda matters. The CRO provides reports to the Board of Directors after the election/referenda. The incumbent will be highly motivated to work in a fast-paced environment, be extremely well organized, detail-oriented, have strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills, and excellent time management skills. The position is a term, with part time hours; however, during the election period the position evolves into full-time hours.

  • Oversee election/referenda, according to the UMSU Election/referenda Policy and By-Laws
  • Strictly adhere to and enforce, in both letter and in spirit, the Election/referenda Policy and By-Laws (as they apply to election/referenda)
  • Manage the electoral process, including but not limited to: the administration of the nomination, campaigning and voting periods, enforcement of applicable rules and procedures, budgeting, marketing and promotion, material preparation and provision, and other supplies and resources
  • Develop, plan and execute all marketing strategies to engage potential candidates and voters, before and during the election/referenda period
  • Establish and maintain positive relationships with campus partners and local media to publicize election/referenda events
  • Remain knowledgeable and current with any relevant decisions of the Board of Directors affecting election/referenda policies and/or procedures
  • Serve as a resource for information on electoral procedures to the Board of Directors

Campaign Coordinator

Part Time| 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday

The University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) is seeking a part-time Campaign Coordinator who is passionate about student engagement, social justice, equity issues and who wants to be part of a collaborative team. Working a minimum of 20 hours per week and reporting to the Marketing Manager, the incumbent works with the UMSU Executive Team to successfully coordinate and implement executive driven campaigns. The role holder will attend weekly campaign meetings, check progress and determine any actions for follow-up. The campaign coordinator is responsible for communicating the aims of the campaign to members and planning, implementing and evaluating the success of the campaign.

  • Background in Marketing & Communication would be an asset
  • Experience with coordinating or implementing a campaign targeting a public
    institution
  • Excellent communication skills, including clear written and verbal communication
  • Knowledge or interest in political, social movement and government affairs
  • Ability to communicate complex information in an accessible format
  • Good long-term planning skills
  • Good task-management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively, to problem-solve, to take initiative when
    appropriate, and to organize and prioritize work
  • Familiarity with UMSU and the UM Campus and organizational structures
  • Knowledge of UMSU resources and services
  • Regular attendance at meetings of all executive campaigns
  • Coordinate UMSU Executive driven campaigns
  • Collaborative development and implementation of campaign strategy
  • Provide guidance, support and necessary resources to the team to enable them to implement their campaign ideas
  • Detailed communication with campaign organizers of availability of resources at UMSU’s disposal
  • Organizing and delegating tasks such as tabling, sending e-mails, writing processes, and other forms of campaign outreach
  • Work with the marketing department to develop a year-round communications strategy for campaigns and ensure the campaigns are effectively publicised to UMSU members
  • Other campaign-related tasks assigned by the Executive Team and/or Marketing Manager
  • Create and submit graphic and event requests
  • Provide budgets and campaign reports to the Marketing Manager for review
  • Institutional relationship-building with campus and community stakeholders
    through in-person and written correspondence
  • Work with the Events & Volunteer Coordinator to plan events and coordinate
    volunteers to promote campaign awareness and engagement

Policy & Strategy Advisor

Full-Time | 8:30am - 4:30pm Monday to Friday.

Reporting to the President of UMSU and working closely with the Vice President Advocacy, the fulltime permanent Policy & Strategy Advisor will be responsible for producing research to inform and advance campaigns, advocacy activities and policy development to the Executive team. The incumbent plays a crucial role in producing research to inform and advance campaigns, advocacy activities, and policy development for the team.

The incumbent should have a thorough understanding of the purposes and functions of a university students’ union, and a good knowledge of government relations, Manitoba politics, and well-rounded understanding of public policy (fiscal, economic, educational and health care). In addition, the incumbent is responsible to stay appraised of developments in post-secondary education, the University of Manitoba, and general issues affecting UMSU members and their external stakeholders - this includes analysis of federal, provincial and university budgets.

This role necessitates someone who can quickly formulate feasible strategies, execute complex campaigns efficiently and tactfully, and holistically evaluate political action to consider potential fallout and create contingency plans. Given the nature of advocacy, social media engagement knowledge and/or visual presentation knowledge is an asset but not a requirement.

  • Create strategic plans to advance UMSU priorities to government and administration
  • Undertake research and analysis at the request of the UMSU Executive and the Board of Directors;
  • Assist in the development of campaign materials and position statements;
  • Prepare briefing packages for UMSU Executives engaging in government lobbying and advocacy including supporting UMSU’s endeavours in their capacity of external lobbying organizations; under the direction of the Executives;
  • Publications that detail the activities of UMSU and initiatives taken by the organization;
  • Provide supporting material for and/or draft UMSU grant proposals for submission to the University administration, provincial and federal government programs;
  • Comfortable communicating with a wide variety of people internal and external to the organization using a wide variety of communication channels;
  • Author articles and position statements for UMSU Executives to be shared with the community and membership
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Graduate degree in political sciences or other relevant degree is a definite asset.
  • Applicants should identify strong experience in researching and policy writing.
  • Knowledge of government relations, public policy, and Manitoba politics and structures
  • Combination of equivalent education and work experience would be considered.
  • Previously held position in communications role (an asset)
  • Previous experience with working at provincial/federal government (an asset)
