The Manitoba Section Canadian Geotechnical Society (CGS) Student Chapter is primarily focused on professional development of students and advancing the education of members in the field of geotechnical engineering. The Manitoba Section CGS Student Chapter strives to improve communication between the CGS Manitoba Section (local chapter of CGS) and student body and increase awareness of the geotechnical field through various public service activities. Throughout the year the chapter is involved in three main areas: (1) technical activities, (2) community service, and (3) social events. Technical activities bring industry into the classroom for students to learn real life application that relate to their studies, community service allows the chapter to volunteer and give back to the community, and social events allow you as students to network with industry professionals to help you make connections for summer/full time employment. The Manitoba Section CGS Student Chapter also competes in the regional GeoWall competition that consists of designing and building a mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) retaining wall model out of paper to support approximately 50 lbs of sand. The Manitoba Section CGS Student Chapter strives to promote geotechnical engineering, enhance students’ knowledge, and build relationships with industry professionals.
