WE (Wind Energy) Design is a student-run, Faculty of Engineering interdisciplinary team with the purpose of providing its members with an opportunity to develop professional skills and experience in the design and fabrication of a small-scale wind turbine.
WE Design was initially conceived in May 2016 by two Mechanical Engineering graduate students with a goal to foster a culture within the undergraduate and graduate student body for wind turbine design and research. After some preliminary blade design by a capstone team in Fall 2016, WE Design was launched in January 2017 as an official University of Manitoba student group with the target to compete at the International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC), organized by the Hanze University of Applied Sciences in Groningen, Netherlands. Since then, the team has grown to 30 undergraduate students. WE Design has successfully participated in the summer 2018 and summer 2019 competitions, and is set to compete with an upgraded and redesigned full scale model in summer 2020.
The team is broken down into 5 systems: Rotor System, Drivetrain, Power Generation, Frame Tower, and Control System. Our vision is to prepare students from multiple disciplines to enter the renewable energy workforce by providing them with real world technology experience such as engineering design, project management, budgeting, report writing, and presentation skills.
