Thone Speech Press Release
November 26, 2025
The Throne Speech is an important opportunity for Manitobans to understand what the provincial government will be focusing on during each legislative session. While the third session of the 43rd Legislature’s throne speech outlines progress in healthcare, affordability, and early education, UMSU is deeply disappointed that the unique needs of post-secondary students were not adequately addressed. While these initiatives are promising, the focus on post-secondary students that UMSU has been advocating for is not evident. Students are struggling. Healthcare investments should include international student coverage, given their significant contributions to Manitoba’s economy. Affordability efforts should extend to student housing, tuition relief, non-repayable financial aid, and access to student jobs. Public safety measures should explicitly include campuses, and Indigenous supports should be expanded to ensure students are supported throughout their entire educational journey. Moreover, a strong partnership between the government and post-secondary students is essential to ensure that Manitoba’s future workforce is supported.
At the University of Manitoba Students’ Union, our mission is to advocate for the needs of our members. Every investment in students is an investment in Manitoba’s future. Supporting students not only helps them achieve their goals but also strengthens the province’s priorities in healthcare, economic resilience, and infrastructure development.
