Winnipeg, MB â The University of Manitoba Studentsâ Union (UMSU) is proud to welcome celebrated equal rights advocate and Emmy Award-winning actress and producer, Laverne Cox, to the University of Manitoba campus on February 26.
Renowned for her ground-breaking role as transgender African American woman âSophia Bursetâ on Orange is the New Black, Cox is a major voice driving transgender awareness and equality, and continues to make historical accomplishments in her career and significant strides in her activism advocating for positive change.
As the first trans woman of colour to be cast in a leading role on a mainstream scripted television show, her list of âfirstsâ also include being the first trans woman on the cover of TIME Magazine, as well as the first trans woman of colour to produce and star in her own television show: VH1âs TRANSForm Me.
Laverne will speak on February 26, 2019 at 12:00 PM in the MPR on the 2nd floor of UMSU University Centre. Tickets will be available at showpass.com/lavernecox-umsu starting Monday, February 11.
Through animated reflection on her own transgender experience, Cox spreads her empowering message of self-acceptance, love, and moving beyond gender expectations to respect and appreciate all individuals.
This special engagement is the first of UMSUâs 2019-2020 Speaker Series, and part of UMSUâs 100th Anniversary celebrations.
