Yesterday, the University of Manitoba Students’ Union (UMSU) President Jakob Sanderson spoke to CityTV regarding stickers promoting ethnonationalist group ID Canada, which appeared in several locations across the University of Manitoba’s Fort Garry campus. Sanderson relayed UMSU’s firm stance against this group and the stickers, which directly oppose UMSU’s equity policy emphasizing a safe and accepting learning environment for all people, from all backgrounds.

UMSU does not condone ID Canada’s beliefs or behaviour in any way. UMSU takes pride in the University of Manitoba being the home of our International Students, who make up 18% of our student body, as well as being the home of the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. Students of all races and cultures are highly valued and recognized in our campus community, and UMSU will continue to celebrate all students on our campuses.

It is unclear whether it was a student who placed the stickers around campus, but UMSU assures everyone that ID Canada is NOT a student group. If anyone is feeling concerned about this group or the stickers, we encourage you to visit the UMSU Office and meet with your UMSU Executives, who are happy to listen to your concerns and/or connect you with any resources you may need.
