On Thursday, March 14, 49 people were killed in a violent, bigoted attack at a New Zealand Mosque. This attack is the latest display of rising Islamophobia in society, something that is incumbent on all of us to stand against. At the University of Manitoba, we have an incredibly active Muslim Students’ Association, which we offer our full support to at this time, as well as to all Muslim students. We also urge all students to engage with our Muslim community, visit our campus mosque, or attend MSA’s events. With a deeper understanding and love for each other between different cultures and religions, we can show a grater love for one another and stand united against these acts of hate.

On Monday, at 11:30 AM in Marshall MacLuhan Hall, there will be a vigil held in response to these attacks that has been coordinated by the MSA, the Pakistani Students’ Association, the Bangladeshi Students’ Association, the University’s Spiritual Care Centre, and other community groups in conjunction with the University’s Diversity and Inclusion event planning committee. UMSU President Jakob Sanderson will be among the speakers at this event and we encourage all to attend and show your solidarity with the Muslim community.
