Want to help people in your community? Do you have a basic understanding of income tax? Volunteer with a community organization to help people by doing their taxes!

This year, in partnership with the Canada Revenue agency and Service Canada UMSU invites UM Students to receive help with their simple tax return.

As a volunteer, you will be completing tax returns in person in University Centre.

As a CVITP volunteer, you’ll receive training, guidance, access to a dedicated help line, and free tax software.

Your Role

As a volunteer tax preparer, you will complete taxes for people with a modest income and a simple tax situation.

Although itā€™s helpful, you donā€™t need experience doing tax returns to volunteer. All volunteers are offered in person and web-based training on how to do taxes, using tax software, and determining their responsibilities.

Application Process:

  • Apply online, applications are open until spots are filledĀ
  • Successful applicants are notified by mid NovemberĀ
  • The mandatory training will occur on February 19th and 20th (you may choose which one to attend)Ā
  • Follow up virtual trainings will occur after the Winter reading week
  • The tax clinic operates from the end of March to mid April
  • *A notation may be added on your Experience Record if a minimum of 9 volunteer hours are completedĀ
