The Community Volunteer Income Tax Program (CVITP) is here to help you with your taxes. We provide free tax filing services by trained student volunteers. All UM students (with valid student ID card) are welcome to use our services.
We will be filing taxes for the 2024 tax year.
The Tax Clinic will be open March 17 to April 2 from 9am – 3pm (Tuesdays to Fridays only).

Simple Tax Situation
If you have no income or income from only these sources:
- Employment Income (does not include self-employment – see below for examples of self employment)
- Pension
- Registered retirement savings plans (RRSPs)
- Interest (under $1000)
- Benefits (e.g. Canada Pension Plan, old age security, disability insurance, employment insurance, and social assistance)
- Scholarships, fellowships. bursaries, or grants
Volunteers are not expected to answer complex tax questions. If a taxpayer needs information that is beyond the volunteer’s expertise, they can find more information on the website or contact the Canada Revenue Agency.
CVITP volunteers will not complete returns for an individual if the individual has:
- business income and expenses
- capital gains or losses
- self-employment income or employment expenses (includes but is not limited to skip the dishes, door dash, odd jobs, freelancer, if you have box 48 on a T4A)
- declared bankruptcy in the tax year (or the year
before, if that return has not yet been filed)
- rental income and expenses
- died
- interest income over $1,000
- foreign property (T1135)
- foreign income
Required Documents
1. Proof of Identity
Examples, but not limited to:
- Provincial or territorial (or equivalent abroad) driver’s license or photo
identification - Canadian or foreign passport (international students should bring a passport)
- Certificate of Indian status
- Military or other government employee identification
2. Personal Information
- Social insurance number (SIN) or individual tax
number (ITN) - Current mailing address
- Marital status
- For newcomers to Canada:
- Date of arrival to Canada
- Amount of foreign-sourced income earned in the tax year before arriving in Canada (converted to Canadian dollar)
3. Receipts for expenses incurred during the tax year being filed
- Required:
- Tuition receipts (T2202A)
- If Applicable:
- Rental receipts and information about the landlord
and rental unit - Property tax receipts
- Donation receipts
- Medical expense receipts if claiming medical expenses
- Child care receipts
- Rental receipts and information about the landlord
4. Tax Information Slips - only if applicable
T4 tax slips:
- T4, Statement of Remuneration Paid
- T4A, Statement of Pension, Retirement, Annuity, and Other Income
- T4E, Statement of Employment Insurance and Other Benefits
T5 tax slips:
- T5, Statement of Investment Income – slip information for individuals
- T5007, Statement of Benefits
Other tax slips:
- T2202, Tuition Enrolment Certificate
- RC62, Universal Child Care Benefit statement
- RC210, Working Income Tax Benefit Advance Payments Statement
- T4FHSA
Appointments
Appointments will be served on a first-come, first-served basis. To ensure you secure a spot, we recommend arriving early.
*Please note: If the queue reaches capacity, the line may close prior to the posted end time. (we have been able to serve around 80 people a day)
