Try Out Exciting New International Food Options
International students passing through UMSU University Centre are seeing some familiar food items newly available at G.P.A.’s Convenience Store. Through G.P.A.’s, students can now enjoy international fare from local Winnipeg restaurants. Selections include mouth-watering Asian pastries from Bakery 88, fresh sushi from Dwarf No Cachette, and African meat pies and dishes from Feast of Africa. Additionally, G.P.A.’s also offers delicious dim sum from Dim Sum Garden, samosas from Eat On Samosa, and jollof rice from African Caribbean Services, which was created by U of M student Johnpaul Williams-Okorie. For superfood lovers, breakfast and snack options with no added sugars or sweeteners from local artisanal food shop, Fauxnola, are also available. At G.P.A.’s, there’s so many great choices for a quick bite on the go.
Make the Most of Patio Season with Fresh, Eco-Friendly Dining
As the chaos of final exams fade in the spring, summer quickly approaches – and with it, so does patio season. This means it’s time to get outside and enjoy the warming sun with some sangria and Winnipeg-made craft beer at Degrees restaurant. Degrees is the only restaurant between Alberta and Quebec with a level 3 Leaf Certification, the highest level a dining establishment can achieve in reducing environmental impacts of the Canadian foodservice industry.
It’s evident that Degrees is committed to environmental sustainability through 100% compostable take-out packaging, minimized water and food waste, a meat light menu, and from-scratch baked goods, sauces, and pastries. By extension, anyone choosing Degrees reduces their own carbon footprint – something all students and staff on campus can feel good about. This summer, Degrees will be managing 4,000 square feet of its own garden space in the UMSU Campus Garden, with harvested fresh produce to be used in the restaurant. This environmentally friendly restaurant now also offers catering services to University of Manitoba student groups – a great, eco-friendly catering alternative, right here on campus.
Energize at the Dynamic Epicentre of Campus Nightlife
If you’re looking to experience something more like a traditional bar, The Hub Social Club offers an open, inviting pub atmosphere with a few creative twists and a little something for everyone. Recently nominated for two Winnipeg Nightlife Awards, including Best Pub as well as Best Event Series for Twoon Up Wednesdays, The Hub offers a variety of entertainment including live music and karaoke, themed socials and holiday events, stand-up Comedy on Campus shows, and more. They also boast the cheapest wing night in the city, must-try daily food and drink specials, and student friendly pricing.
Since The Hub doesn’t have to worry about paying a lease anymore, profits are reinvested right back into the students that enjoy its services. Student groups can book The Hub’s space free of cost to host social or fundraising events, like the Rainbow Pride Mosaic’s Erotic Drag Bingo or faculty socials. Best of all, the student group gets to keep all profits they make from their event. The Hub staff will even help with event planning to make the party the greatest it can be, which includes deals on catering and food.
The Hub isn’t just bustling in the evenings, though – during the day, The Hub’s dedication to hospitality creates a centre for culture, spirit and good times. Whether you’re wanting to kick up your feet and relax with friends, try out some unique pub fare and beverages, or try out your dance moves and meet new people, there’s something for you at The Hub.
Contemporary Remodelling Underway for IQs Café & Billiards
It’s important for students to have comfortable, tasteful and accessible student spaces like The Hub and IQ’s Café & Billiards on campus. Currently, renovations are underway to refurbish and renew IQ’s Café and Billiards, with the modernized space to be unveiled in fall 2017. Student survey responses said the space was in need of a facelift to more contemporary styles, which meant renovations were in order to deliver the best value for students who frequently visit IQ’s to study, relax, or shoot some pool balls with friends on campus. After the updates are complete, IQ’s will be introducing a variety of new smoothies and an extended line of pastries. But don’t worry – they’ll continue to serve two of the current student favourites, Starbucks and bubble tea.
There are so many fantastic things available for students at the University of Manitoba through UMSU’s businesses. Check them out between and after classes, with friends or with family members. Explore, socialize, enjoy a multitude of tasty treats – and have a great time!
